Meet the winners - Doris
Doris says she's not a great example of a runner, I beg to disagree! This charming woman has won several of our most recent challenges. She loves running, it makes her feel great and she makes sure she gets the running in.
Where do you live and what do you do when you're not running or being a mom?
I live in Vancouver. I am an anesthesiologist but I'm taking a year off after having my third baby.
How did you start running? For how long have you been running?
I'm not really a runner but I've always tried to run. I restarted running about 8 months ago. I'm slow. Really slow. Painfully slow. Old men with walkers and on oxygen pass me.
When do you go running and where? Do you have a favorite run?
I run in the mornings on the trails by my house. My favorite run is when it's over.
What do you like best about running?
How I feel when it's done. Happy.
How did you find Run with E?
On Heidi Swanson's blog. End consumer is hilarious BTW.
Thank you Doris!

What now?
what do you want the next challenge to be about?
I'm thinking lefties.
My left foot.
Lisa Left Eye Lopez.
Elvis has left the building.
but if you have a better idea, bring it on. Personally I loved running for the pandemic of 1918.

New challenge
Doris has won the past two challenges and it seems likely she will take the lead again. We need to keep up with her! Perhaps this is the only thing that could make me run again! Tahnk you Doris!
I'll send winners q's soon!

It's a disease is over!
Most people ran in honor of the victims of the pandemic flu of 1918. But the winner, Fifi, ran for Black Death! Well run everyone!

Today was so great

New challenge!
There's talk of the swine flu everywhere. Each victim of every disease is horrible. This time let's run in honor of those who suffered illnesses that are no longer prevalent in the western world.

Also!
Am I the only one having problems with the new Nike+ site? I'm on a mac. You'd think they'd optimise an Apple related product for macs?
Yuck
Running was so heavy this morning too. But when you're done it's so great. And the only way to get back to smooth effortless running is to keep at it even when it's like this morning. Heavy. Gruesome.

It's getting rougher, colder, darker
I went for a run this morning. I haven't been running for a while, Anders has been away. I've been battling something fluish and the kids have been all over. But this morning. So beautiful out. The first kilometer was awful, but then Lily Allen and I had a fine time together with the autumn sun.
Keep it up. Winter is approaching. Run with me through this dark, cold, dreadful period of the year! It's the only way to deal with it.

Meet the winners - Lina!
My foxy neighbor Carlina, Lina, brought home a double victory. She won both the Running into October AND the Fridays vs Sundays challenge. (In picture above, Lina transports herself in her favorite mode, by letting someone else do the running for her).
She stormed in to our bookclub last week, fuming cause someone had beat her to the win. Turns out that someone was herself!
My 12,6 kilometers seemed like they were all wasted when I thought they hadn't registered. I'm a competitive person. When I lose, I can get a bit bitter.
Where do you run?
Mostly in the forest, sometimes I run in the streets. And I've recently taken up running at the running track!
How far and how often do you run?
No matter what, I try to run 3 times a week. Since a few weeks back, I run at least 10 k each time I go running. It's taken me a year to run that distance comfortably.
What's your goal when it comes to running?
Getting in (even better) shape, to be by myself, to get some fresh air. To be honest I'd also like to get more of a long distance runner's body, but I think I have to let go of that goal.
What would you like to say to people who can't make it out the door?
Try to think of the running as a promise to yourself and a competition against yourself. Think of your body like a machine, your head just happens to sit on top of this fantastic running machine. And remember that you'll feel so much better once you're out running and even better when you're done.
THANKS LINA!

Hässelbyloppet
Det gick sådär. 56.03. Jag är missnöjd, trodde jag skulle springa fortare. SÅ missnöjd att jag försökte få det till att den digitala tidtagningen kanske var fel. Jag är tydligen en sämre förlorare än jag trodde.

Meet the winners - Annika Ekdahl Nordh
Lovely Annika Ekdahl Nordh is one of my favorite moms at school and daycare. Her daughter My is one of Vanja's closest friends. Her son Max shares many things with Joel. Like right now, chicken pox. Annika is currently in Moscow at a wedding, but she'll be back soon.
Annika ran like crazy to bring home the victory.
How does it feel?
Great, thank you! I had really made up my mind this time. It was my turn to win.
What was your strategy?
To take the lead early on, and never let it go.
How often did you run? And how far?
As it turned out, I had to run more or less every day to keep up against Nikki and Clara. Mostly, I ran 7 km runs but every now and then I ran 12k and 6k too.
And now, how much are you running now?
Not much. My legs need some rest!
Congratulations Annika!

She and her husband welcomed 3 kids in less than 4 years and Clara often goes running to get a little time to herself. In the past year of running, Clara has lost over 10 pounds and an close relationship with her Nike+.

A note from Aymo
Aymo writes;
When I arrived in the US, Immigration took a special interest in me, and they started reviewing every single item of my suitcase, asking zillion of questions on everything ("What is this? A brief, I sometimes wear it under my trousers" etc...) It lasted forever, and I was growing very nervous. The guys were far from welcoming, and at some point I thought they would send me back to Europe.
Then one of them found my running shoes, and said, "Oh, you're a runner!" Oh yes, I exaggerated it a bit, and I suddenly became Usain Bolt and Emi Guner all in one. He was a runner too, of course, and that did it! If it weren't for running, I might have been sleeping in Alcatraz last night!

Meet the new runners - Deborah
Deborah runs with us in Flagstaff, Arizona. She writes:
"In the last 6 months I have gained a few pounds, feel sluggish and soft. I WANT to get back into a routine, now that school is in session and I have the days to do this. I'd like to run pain free. The weather is cooling and that's better for me (I live in Arizona, in Flagstaff at 7,000 feet... not super hot, but hot enough for my tastes) for the outdoor runs. I have just run on my own, with no plan or training schedule, but think that a challenge would be good. No, it would be GREAT!"

Sacha kills the competition.
Come on! Run with us for the funny men! Give Sacha a run for his money.
I'm with Andy Richter. Poor Andy Samberg hasn't got a single foot soldier.

Meet the new runners - Anne
Anne runs with us in Rhode Island. She writes:
My name is Anne LaFex, and I live in Warren, Rhode Island. I am a student, though, so my roots are in Syracuse, New York, and even after seven years of school I still consider that my home.
I don't know why I run. I actually hated running throughout my years as a competitive athlete (I played water polo in college). When I started law school, I needed a quicker, more efficient form of exercise than swimming. Jumping in a pool and doing a 2500-3500 yard workout can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Add in changing and showering, and I was looking at 2 hours of my day just working out. For anyone who has gone to law school, you know first year doesn't provide the luxury of time. So I started running on the treadmill at my school's gym about two years ago because it was quicker and easier than anything else.
I moved to the place I live now over a year ago, and it happens to be only a block away from one of the bike/run paths here in RI. It runs 14.5 miles from Bristol, which is one town south of Warren, up to Providence along the water. When I moved to Warren, I started running outside because of the easy access to this beautiful and peaceful scene. Nowadays I run both inside and out, depending on the weather, how much time I have, and whether I'm at school or home.

Meet the new runners - FIONA
My name is Fiona. I'm from Scotland but have been living in North Vancouver, BC for almost 4 years (my husband is Canadian). I've been running since my first year at university which I refuse to believe was 11 years ago ... eek! I run because I love the way it makes me feel and I can't imagine not doing it. I run to clear my head, blow away cobwebs and to counteract my weakness for good food, wine and chocolate. I run because I love to listen to my baby blabbering and singing on our runs together *sigh*.
I've attached a picture of my running partner and I taken before we hit the trails this morning.
I'm looking forward to this challenge and am excited to join your community!
Many thanks,
Fiona
No pic of Shana, but she's here
She writes:
I'm living this year in the Hague, where I've just moved from Washington, DC and looking for new places to run and running partners. I've been running for several years on and off, but want to work to increase speed and distance, and am feeling like I need some inspiration on that end. Thanks so much for including me!

And hey, new runners
If you wonder who we are, the people already here, then check the "meet the winners" link. Most of us have won at least once.
Meet the new runners - Caren
Like wise people sometimes do, Caren in Seattle started running to stay sane.
She writes:
I live in Seattle Washington and my name is Caren Gillespie. I am a mother of 2 (2year old Sadie and 5 year old Max). I started running last November to help with a serious bout of Insomnia. I came to like it and hate it at the same time but being a busy mom, it was the only time I got to myself somedays. I started running in the winter at around 6:45 in the morning while it was still dark out which was a rush. I don't have a picture of where I run perse because I choose a lot of different routes depending on the mood.
Meet the new runners - Nikki
Nikki runs with us in Minneapolis. She's a bit afraid of winter approaching so soon, but here at Run with e, we won't let snow or sub zero degrees (Celsius) stop us.
She writes:
My name is Nikki. I live in Minneapolis, MN in the USA and am lucky enough to have some gorgeous lakes to run around. Unfortunately summer will be coming to an end soon which will move my runs indoors (just as soon as we purchase a treadmill). I started running regularly in April 2009 with the Couch to 5k program and once that was complete I started the Nike+ 10k training. I will be running my first 10k race on Saturday, October 3!! My personal best 5k time is 29:04 so I'm not super fast, but I enjoy my runs.

New challenge starting tomorrow
New individual challenge starting tomorrow. We'll have new runners in this challenge. New runners, please send me a mail with a brief introduction of yourself and a picture! emi@lovegun.net
No walking in these challenges. Running only. If you're at the walking stage, welcome over to http://runwitherookie.blogspot.com. Why am I so hard on walkers? Why should you not get to walk if you're tired? Because running is harder, and it's not fair to those who run if there are others walking.
Stop the presses!
CLARA IS THE WINNER!
She is such a worthy winner. She's had a rough September so far, with kids sick left and right. We're proud of you Clara!
Send me a picture so I can post it here.

Challenge over too soon
Ok, so the Run for men challenge is over, because somehow I opened it to the gallery and just like that someone, most likely a male runner added himself and because he had ran 66 kms in a week our challenge was over just like that.
I'm reissuing the challenge. We're starting over.
I'm only having closed challenges because I like the sense of community. But if you read this and want in, feel free to mail me and I'll let you in.

Run with e -the soundtrack
This is what I listen to when I run. You'll love it too. There's one song missing from that track that you need to add. It's Sunny with Boney M. It's essential. This mix is so great and filled with joy I can't help myself from singing along really loud on the trail. It's one of the best feelings in the world.
My singing is similar to Cameron's.

Are you unfit and tired, dreaming of becoming a runner?
I'm looking for a running rookie to feature here on run with e. I'm looking for someone who can't even run a kilometer without switching to walking. I'm looking for someone who's thinking enough is enough, tomorrow I'll start.
I want to train you over mail, to have you running 5 kms in half a year, 10k in a year. You can do it. You just haven't tried enough.
Mail me. Overweight and lazy people most welcome, but you must dedicate yourself to this. And you will need the Nike+ equipment.
Love

The enabler
Ok, 2 new challenges in effect
If you wan to run with us, send me an e-mail (emi@lovegun.net) with a brief presentation of yourself. There's just one rule: you must run not walk, however slow you run.

Rewards for running
I'm just 9 kms from 1000 completed kms since I started running with Nike+.
Or make that since I started running. I'm celebrating by buying a pair of new shoes. Any recommendations? Also need a new top.

COME ON!
The literary women seem to have lost all their running drive! Come on little women, run!
Let's get this over with. Next challenge will be a solo thing or a shorter tribute to the men we love.
Ok, about the Tjejmilen 10k race. It was my second race. 26 000 women running. Only 2 groups had some kind of time limit if you were an unseeded runner. You could go with the group that aimed at running 10 k in less than 55 mins or between 55-59. I picked sub 55 and started last in that group. Literally last. I stood behind the crowd and danced around a little to warm up. Then the race was on and it was so freakishly crowded and slow. Frustrated and angry, I had a hard time enjoying the stuff that otherwise make races 1st class running experiences - you're served treats on the way, people cheer for you and at the end of the race you're awarded a medal!
After appx. 5k, it got a little less crowded and I saw a clearly anorexic runner who I thought would be a great person to hang on to. Her determination would carry me all the way. Then I lost sight of her and just kept running. I felt so light and it was a really easy trail to run. No hills, at least not compared to what I'm used to. My finishing time was 57,12. I wasn't even out of breath as I crossed the finish line, but I was really disappointed. Next race I'm not running last in the biggest group.

The winner! ALL BOW TO QUEEN ISABELLAH!
Here's the Tjejmilen winner, the incredible Isabellah Andersson who ran her 10k in 33.49 minutes. She gave birth in January. Just look at her, she's so awesome. I almost broke down crying when running, thinking about the 26 000 women out running, using their bodies the way it's built to be used, unrestrained by repressive notions of how women should behave and move. The sound of freedom pattered with 52000 feet. It was impressive. And frustratingly crowded.

Walking vs Running
I don't really think one is better than the other. But in these challenges, you have to pick one.

I'm out the door
Important question
Should I start a "Walk with e" too? For walking only?
Would you be interested in that?
What do you say all ye pregnant, tired, injured people?
Running with mummies
Only a few days to go til Tjejmilen. I ran 12.3 kms on Sunday to get ready. It was raining, but it was nice. I was running listening to my favorite egyptologist Barbara Mertz' book Tombs, temples & Hieroglyphs.
It was longer than I usually run. I was sore. But tjejmilen will be fine.

Bridget's a much better runner than anyone thought!
Anna Karenina falling way behind.
Martha probably too busy divorcing, marrying, thinking and working to run right now.
Jane Eyre is quite impressive. Good for you, mr Rochester.

Rekindling an old flame
This morning I woke up, intent on going running. It was 6 am. It was beautiful out. I put on my training gear and went outside but did not run. For the first time in about a year, I went for a brisk walk instead. I even found a golden coin, worth 10 kr, about a dollar. It's now my lucky coin.
Walking used to be my everything, I was always a walker. Then running swept into my life and made me forget all about walking.
Walking was my first love. I love it still. I might be doing a little more two timing over the next few months.
Do you walk? Or just run?
ps. No walking in run with e though. Running only. I wasn't using the Nike+ kit.
Sunday, August 16, 2009
Jane Eyre runs like a maniac.
Martha Quest quite the athletic type too, who knew? Bridget not last not first. Anna Karenina, supported only by me, far behind the rest of you. I thought I'd go running tonight, but it's so windy out there.

Reading tip
Heidi Swanson (of 101 Cookbooks), who runs with us at times, asked if I'd read "Born to Run". I hadn't but proceeded to do so, or rather listened my way through it, as I ran.
It was so entertaining, perhaps you'll like it too.
A word of warning: It will most likely cause you to start running barefoot or at least buy those weird Vibram FiveFingers.

Core training with babies -The bitch
This one is often called the plank, but we call it the bitch because that's what it is.
Stand like so and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat with the other arm. People will feel sorry for you and might kiss you.
Stand like so and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat with the other arm. People will feel sorry for you and might kiss you.
I've heard people can do this with their arm straightened. I can not fathom doing that.
Core training with babies -Gotta go on the cross
We all know it must have sucked to be nailed to a cross. Now to add to injury, imagine you really had to pee but still had some sense of vanity in that hopeless situation. That's what this exercise is like, but somehow your legs have managed to escape the nails and are able to swing from side to side while your upper body stays put and arms stretched to each side. It's hard! Once you've mastered it, try doing it with straight legs!
No one, not even superheroes will help you.
Other people call this exercise the pendulum. What do they know.
